Basic Dumplings Recipe

These are very light dumplings. Flavor them in different ways and serve instead of potatoes, for a change with with casseroles and stews, or drop tiny ones into a soup.

 

You will need:-

125 g (4 oz) self raising flour
½ teaspoon salt
60 g (2 oz) suet or 30 g (1 oz) butter or margarine
3-4 tablespoons cold water

 

Cooking Time:- 25-30 minutes

 

Sift dry ingredients together. Add suet or rub in butter or margarine. Use enough of the water to mix to a dry dough. Serves 4-6.


Variations:
Herby Dumplings, good with pork and veal dishes. Add ½ teaspoon mixed dried herbs to dry ingredients.


Mustard Dumplings, good with beef. Add ½ teaspoon dry mustard to dry ingredients.

 

Walnut Dumplings, with chicken. 4-5 chopped walnuts added to mixture before the water.
