Jewish Style Noodle Bake Recipe

Unusual apple and noodle bake flavored with poppy seeds - a good Sabbath dish as it is eaten cold and all the cooking can be done on the day before.

 

Dessert:- Serves 4

 

Overall Timing:- 1 hour

 

Oven Setting:- 325°F; Gas Mark 3

 

Equipment:- Saucepan, large bowl, shallow ovenproof dish

 

Freezing:- Not recommended

 

Ingredients:-

½ pint milk

1 pint water

8 oz. noodles

2 oz. melted butter

2 eggs

2 large dessert apples

2 oz. walnut pieces

3 oz. caster sugar

2 tablespoons poppy seeds

 

Method:-

1. Put the milk and water into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Add the noodles, bring back to the boil and simmer till al dente. Drain and put into a large bowl. Stir the melted butter and beaten eggs into the noodles and toss till lightly coated.

 

2. Preheat oven to 325°F Gas 3.

 

3. Grease the dish and spread one third of the noodles over the base. Wash, core and thinly slice the apples. Arrange half the slices over the noodles with half the walnuts. Sprinkle with one third of the sugar and poppy seeds.

 

4. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of noodles arranges in a lattice pattern. Sprinkle with the remaining sugar and poppy seeds.

 

5. Bake in the center of the oven for about 35 minutes till the apples are tender. Remove from the oven and cool completely before serving.
