Sicilian Orange Dessert (Italy) Recipe

You will need:-

4 large oranges

6 oz. castor sugar

2 tablespoons Cointreau or Curacao (optional)

½ pint water

 

Preparation Time:- 15 minutes

 

Finely grate zest of two oranges (see Quick Tip below). Carefully peel all the oranges with a sharp knife removing the pith. Heat water slowly with sugar until completely dissolved and then boil gently for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the grated orange rind and liqueur, if used.

 

Arrange the oranges close together in a deep dish and pour the hot syrup over, then allow to cool.

 

Spoon the syrup over the tops of the oranges again when quite cold. Chill before serving. Serve cut across in slices. Spread slices on a plate and spoon syrup over them. Serves 4.

 

Quick Tip

 

When grating the rind off an orange or lemon, hold the fruit and rub gently against the grater turning fruit round frequently. Take care not to grate off the pith as this will give a bitter taste.
