Cheese Celery Loaf Recipe

You will need.....       1 lb. self-raising flour

                               2 teaspoons salt                         

                               1 1/2 oz. butter

                               3 large sticks celery

                               6 oz. mature Cheddar cheese                            

Preparation Time      1 clove garlic or a few dehydrated flakes

15 minutes                1 egg

                               1/2 pint milk less 2 tablespoons

Cooking Time           

55 minutes

 

Oven setting            

425ºF; Gas Mark 7    

 

Grease a 2-lb. loaf tin. Sift flour and salt into a bowl and rub in fat until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

 

Wash and chop celery finely. Crush garlic if a clove is used and grate cheese coarsely. Add celery, garlic and cheese to flour. Beat egg and milk together, add gradually to dry ingredients and mix to form a soft dough. Knead lightly and quickly on a floured table, then shape into an oblong. Place in the loaf tin and bake in a hot oven for about 55 minutes.

 

Turn out and cool on a wire tray. Serve fresh with butter.

 

Quick Tip

 

When cooking with yeast, store fresh yeast in a loosely tied polythene bag. It will keep for 4-5 days in a cold place, up to 1 month in a refrigerator and up to 1 year in a deep freeze.
